I was in an ultramarathon paddling race recently on a river. The elite racers were just following a GPS track that was designed to optimize their route. I was shocked when an hour into the race they came past me…they should have been well out in front of me. Apparently the GPS track had led them down into dead end channels…channels that were only navigable in high water years. I hadn’t even noticed those side channels because I was focused on following the highest current flow. Best path had seemed obvious to me! I’m proud to have raised a son who prefers a paper map and compass.
